Highway Materials Testing

Compaction Factor Test

The laboratory mix design gives the proportion of the mineral aggregate combination in terms of individual sieve sizes, for actual operational purpose in the field, blending of the two or more sizes of aggregates (each size having within its range of individual sieve size) would be necessary. This blending ratio is obtained on a weight basis giving percent weight of the coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and filler needed to give the ultimate gradation. This mineral aggregate combination together with the corresponding optimum bitumen content as determined in the laboratory, constitute the job mix formula for implementation during construction.
Types of Dense graded Bituminous Mixes

  • ➢ Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM)
  • ➢ Semi-Dense Bituminous Concrete (SDBC)l
  • ➢ Bituminous Concrete (BC)
  • ➢ Bituminous Macadam (BM)
  • ➢ Semi Dense Asphalt Concrete (SDAC)
  • ➢ Mastic Asphalt
  • ➢ Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA)
  • ➢ Bituminous Cold Mix (Including Gravel Emulsion)
  • ➢ Recipe Cold Mix
  • ➢ Wet Mix Macadam (WMM)
  • ➢ Water Bound Macadam (WBM)
  • ➢ Granular Sub-base (GSB)

Bitumen & Asphalt Testing

Bitumen: - A black or dark brown non-crystalline solid or viscous material having adhesive properties, derived from petroleum either by natural or refinery processes and substantially soluble in carbon disulphide.
Asphalt: - A natural or artificial mixture in which bitumen is associated with inert mineral matter. The word ‘asphalt’ should always be qualified by indication of its origin or nature.

Bitumen Emulsion Testing

A liquid product in which a substantial amount of bitumen is dispersed in a finely divided droplets in an aqueous medium containing an emulsifier and a stabilizer.
Emulsified bitumen shall be of the following three types

  • ➢ Rapid Setting: Type RS
  • ➢ Medium Setting: Type MS
  • ➢ Slow Setting: Type SS

Bitumen Emulsion, Rapid Setting —A quick setting emulsified bitumen used for surface treatment, penetration macadam and tack coating.
Bitumen Emulsion, Medium Setting — A medium setting emulsified bitumen used for plant or road mixes with fine aggregates between 5 percent and 20 percent retained on 2.36 mm sieve. Used for open graded premix work and bituminous macadam.
Bitumen Emulsion, Slow Setting — A slow setting emulsified bitumen used for plant or road mixes with graded fine aggregates greater than 20 percent, passes a 2.36 mm sieve and a portion of which may pass a 75 micron sieve. Used in slurry seal, seal coat, soil hand stabilization, etc.

Bitumen Mix Testing

The bituminous mix design aims to determine the proportion of bitumen, filler, fine aggregates, and coarse aggregates to produce a mix which is workable, strong, durable and economical. The requirements of the mix design and the two major stages of the mix design, i.e. dry mix design and wet mix design.
